From Zero to Viral: Building an Emoji Mashup Generator
The engineering decisions, design choices, and SEO strategy behind Emoji Kitchen. We built Emoji Kitchen in 3 days. Here's the complete story — what worked, what didn't, and what we'd do differently. Day 1: MVP — Canvas compositing engine with 3 modes (Fusion, Ghost, Split). Basic emoji picker with 100 emojis. Download PNG. No design, pure function. Deployed to Cloudflare. Worked. Ugly but worked. Day 2: Polish — Added 5 more modes, 200 more emojis, 30 presets, keyboard shortcuts. Built gallery, about, and blog pages. Started SEO with meta tags and sitemap. Still ugly, but now useful. Day 3: Design — Complete visual overhaul. Neon Playground theme with glass morphism. Custom fonts (Outfit + DM Sans). Animated canvas glow border. Drag control on canvas. Color picker. Mobile responsive. This is the version you see now. What We Got Right: - Canvas over DOM — instant performance, zero re-renders - URL-based sharing — viral-ready from day one - Lazy loading every page — minimal initial bundle - 30 curated presets — gives users instant value before they learn the tool What We'd Do Differently: - Start with design, not add it later — the redesign was 60% of total work - More blog articles from day one for SEO - Transparent backgrounds for PNG exports — the #1 feature request.
