Why We Built Emoji Kitchen Without AI
We chose pure Canvas compositing over machine learning. Here's why deterministic rendering is better. When we started building Emoji Kitchen, the obvious question was: "Why not use AI to generate emoji mashups?" Google's version uses machine learning. Midjourney makes anything. So why did we choose deterministic Canvas compositing? Speed: AI generation requires a server, a GPU, and seconds of processing. Canvas compositing runs in your browser at 60fps with zero latency. No loading spinners, no API calls, no rate limits. Predictability: With AI, you never know what you'll get. With blend modes, every combination produces a predictable, reproducible result. Share a link — everyone sees exactly the same thing. Privacy: AI requires sending data to servers. Canvas runs entirely on your device. Nothing leaves your browser. Cost: AI inference costs money per generation. Canvas compositing is free forever. We can offer unlimited use without ads. Creative Control: AI gives you what it thinks you want. Blend modes give you direct control — scale, position, rotation, opacity. You're the artist, not the prompter. Open Source: Our compositing logic is ~100 lines of readable JavaScript. Anyone can understand, modify, or contribute. The tradeoff is that our results look like composited emojis, not photorealistic art. But that's the point — Emoji Kitchen is about playful, immediate creative expression.
